You had to click post reply and wait for a second page to load and then type. This I imagine is playing a part role in the decline in forum activity in event times. Who can be bothered going to a separate page just to type a quick post. The text box that I’m using now is easy, all on the same page, easy to reference other posts in the thread and is just like using the comment reply feature on a Facebook post or something. Perhaps this could get looked at? If you want to hold forum activity then surely it’s vital to make posting as easy as could possibly be.

I prefer the old theme too, but there should be a Quick Reply button in Quarto. Does that not show up for you?

Lol I feel stupid because I didn’t see that. Is it possible to have it open by default?

I don't think there's an option for that, so it would probably require custom modifications. I imagine the theme's creator wanted to make it sleek and not have things like that be expanded by default, in the same way some things in the full posting page are tucked away in tabs.

I wonder if the button is more obvious to people who were never used to the old theme and whose brains aren't expecting to see a big always-there quick-reply box.

Anyway, it may be that people like you and me who got used to the old theme should just keep using that. :D
I even prefer it on my phone (though I suppose that has something to do with the fact that it's one of those big 6" ones :P).

Is there any way that a scheduling posts system could be implemented? As in you pick a time and date for a certain post to go out? I feel like this would be helpful in things like the House Cup, where instead of telling people that a challenge/team will "be out soon/tomorrow," you could say "12:00 PM GMT, Tuesday, 14 July," or something like that. Honestly, I'm mostly asking this to help me be consistent with my fun fact thread, but I feel like it could be a useful forum feature, even though many people wouldn't use it.

So what’s the plan with the forum then? It’s been an utter wasteland for the last month or so, and this is when activity should be peaking in the year really. There is no *forum*’community, and there is no real discussion thread of sorts. It’s by far the worse it’s ever been, and I really really doubt it’s ever coming back from this - there has been enough revival attempts, some with varying degrees of success anddd... it’s just not working. I spoke with Thaprot the other day and we mentioned GTF and he said it was dying organically, and I guess he’s right. I’d like to hope our efforts did extend the death and provide some fun for a couple of more years though.

I personally don’t think René should continue to invest his time or be expected to do much. Some suggestions are time consuming, and whilst there often is a short term bounce when new things are introduced, they’re just not long lasting.

I think it’s a shame if GTF is just left to become a wasteland full of spam and no real discussion. People are pretending the Discord has relevance to the forum, but - it’s a completely different community and atmosphere on there. I got called a predator the other day because I’m 21. A year ago on here, 21 was pretty much the norm for established members lol.

Considering you can count the number of people who actually use the forum regularly on maybe one hand now, maybe a discussion needs to be have. Not closing the site down, but maybe it could just be archived or something. There are literally like, no under 16s using apart of the forum except for Josue. I think it would be really cool if there was a push for for the over 18s (does GFO *have* to be 18, by the way?) to go to GFO. One of the reasons I don’t really go on GFO much is because it doesn’t really feel like GTF and there isn’t exactly many familiar faces. It we could get the people who actually care about foruming on the
same forum, at least that’s something... and I think GFO still has its chat and cams so that’d be nice to revisit.

Your thoughts mirror my own. I'm going to give this some serious consideration now that I'm in a position to do so again, but a lot of what you've said here matches what has occurred to me since getting back.

I'm cleaning up the spam either way, though. Even if it's only going to be an archive, it deserves to be a spam-free one.

I noticed you removed the discord link! although I think its days are gone, the only way GTF could possibly gain some sense of community is through a chat, seems like the final blow to remove that! Or even returning older members like me wouldn't be able to access it.

It's good to hear from you, Ethan — please know that I'll always appreciate your input. :keke:

I'd like to point out that everything I'm doing at this point is part of my wild experiment to see if the forum can be revived and is subject to evaluation and possible reversal. The idea is that we're trying to get people to post on the forum more rather than just say what they want to say on Discord. The Discord was always meant to complement the forum rather than replace it, but looking at the statistics since it was introduced, it's pretty obvious that what it's been doing is replacing the forum as the place where people say stuff, and that a consequence of that is the death of the forum. If the forum dies, there will be no GTF at all, and then the Discord definitely won't get any more visitors from the site.

In the three days before I made all these changes, the Discord got only 10-20 messages a day on average; less than 10 on one of those days. That situation was not sustainable for either the forum or the Discord.

The forum itself was getting less than 3 posts per day. This has now risen to about 30, and engagement from new members has risen noticeably. I want to see where this goes.

Do note that all new members still receive a link to the Discord in the welcome PM, which mentions that joining it will mean they'll get notifications of all new posts that are made.

Despite it's very obvious flaws, might it be a thing to bring back Flashchat? Or is that dead in the water? At least it had the association with the forum.

And we still don't have cams on Discord servers yet, either - so who knows, maybe some of us old fags might use it over the Christmas period if we're bored :P

No harm it being there IMO.

It might even be an idea to (somehow?) combine the GFO and GTF's flashchats. I'm not sure if the age differences would be problematic given the activity of both.

Fair enough, I've always emphasised that the forum should come first =P But I do think at this stage is not a case of 'if the forum dies' as you say, its already dead. Dead doesn't mean zero posts (although it pretty much came to that) dead is the when the community no longer exists, and even if you get new members joining and making a thread or two if there's no established userbase here ready to interact with and integrate these members then nothing will happen. Also pretty much every member of Discord generation - the ones who are meant to be established now and take over as the custodians of GTF have made their own Discord server, marketing it as GTF 2.0 and even have CURRENT mods involved. It's quite sad to see :(

I still have the link to flashchat and went on it with some other members a few months ago, she still works! obviously cams themselves are very temperamental but the chat itself works fine.

It's an interesting idea for sure, and it fits in with the theme of crazy experiments that might just work.

I'm not sure how combining them would work out in terms of the authentication system (which meant that forum users were automatically logged in, and that if they weren't logged in, they could enter their forum username and password directly into the chat).

I think the main problem is that Flash itself has been deprecated and is considered unsafe, which means it is no longer being supported by modern versions of web browsers. Of course 123FlashChat had its HTML5 version, but that still relied on Flash to support video.

Indeed. I'm still working on clarifying how to stop getting them, but for now, if you want to stop getting them entirely, just let me know and I'll take care of it :P

(I didn't enable them for everyone who ever posted on the forum, just people who have been active in the last 3 months.)

The emails are clearly working, though! I've been seeing new members come back to read replies to their posts sometimes within minutes, sometimes going on to post new replies right away, where previously it was very common for them to never return at all.

I get what you're saying, and it is definitely sad. But if there's any chance of this place continuing to help young gay people as it's done in the past, I want to take it.

But what if the forum did make a comeback with new members and people such as yourself were still here, actively posting and guiding the community's development in the ways of the past? :eli:
