Forum rules

Welcome to the News, Current Affairs & Debate subforum.

This forum is the place for intellectual discussions relating to news, current affairs, or philosophical & scientific debates. There are some guidelines that apply specifically to posts in this forum, of which you will be expected to have made yourself aware before participating. They are as follows:

  • Intellectually stimulating topics only. If you can't have a deep discussion about something, it does not belong here.
  • If you're going to post, have something to say. When you make a new thread, write the initial post in a way that provides an introduction to the topic and invites further discussion. You could tell us how you feel and why, but always aim for constructive responses that further a discussion about the ideas involved, rather than a simple list of people's views. (Instead of asking "Are you a vegetarian?", discuss some of the arguments involved.) This guideline likewise applies for responses to topics.
  • Write using good English. That means full sentences with proper capitalisation, punctuation, spelling and grammar. No one is perfect, though; this is not an invitation to criticise others for minor mistakes.
  • Be nice. This is a forum for rational discourse, not flame wars. No one is always right. Be respectful of other people's views and accept that we are all entitled to our own.

These guidelines will be enforced by the moderators based on their best judgement, and anyone who does not take them seriously will lose the privilege of posting here. Spammers will be banned from the entire forum.

If you had to choose one of the potential GOP candidates out there, which one would you choose and why?

John Huntsman Is the only one I could ever imagine voting for, the rest are

Can't believe one of them will be POTUS in 2012? My faith in humanity will reach an even lower point.

Jon Huntsman. Paul is a religious nut job, but at least he doesn't try to force it on other people.

This.

Edit to answer the question why: Primarily his foreign policy. Also his libertarian beliefs.

Huntsman or Paul.. neither would have a chance of winning, though. They aren't conservative enough.

Actually they're both really conservative. Criminalizing abortion and homosexuality are inline with the belief that the government should be large and exert a lot of control over people. It's pretty contradictory...

Ron Paul fans, come back to Earth. Ron Paul will never ever ever ever be President. Huntsman is the most logical GOP candidate, which is why they dislike him so much. And I would never vote Republican.

Huntsman is actually polling far below Paul right now. If anything, Paul has a much higher chance than Huntsman does...

I feel like Huntsman would do a good job but I don't think he has a chance at the nomination. Romney has the best chance and is the least crazy of the front runners.

Of those who responded are you all republicans? If so, what do you say to people who say you can't be gay and a republican?

Paul is a hardline libertarian, so he's pretty socially liberal as far as actual policy goes. He is the most conservative candidate, though.

OP: I'm voting for Dr. Paul.

Also, quandmeme is an idiot. Please keep that in mind.

you implied that ron paul supporters are out of touch with reality because he's never going to be president, then called huntsman a more logical choice.

Niko123 doesn't understand politics. Ron Paul is not a hardline libertarian. He is pro-life and wrote a bill that would keep DOMA challenges out of Federal Courts. Ron Paul is only libertarian when it suits him. And apparently I'm an idiot for saying he'll never be President. Again, Chase, you can't read. I said Huntsman is the most logical candidate; meaning he has the most logic or is the most reasonable candidate if you prefer.

I never disagreed with you in that regard, nor did anyone else.
Again, Chase, you can't read.

You're on to me. I keep writing out random strings of words hoping that they're relevant to what's being discussed.

Whatever dude. You're just arguing semantics now.

No.

I understand gays being conservative but being gay and republican just doesn't make sense to me.
