Do you have a Discord account? If not, here is why you should make one

Unread postby Jacketh » 1st September, 2017, 3:49 am

Discord was launched in 2015 primarily for gamers and as competition for programs like Teamspeak. Since then, it has exploded and is now taking on Skype with the launch of its video chat. Various Reddit communities you will notice use Discord and other forums I've noticed do too. Our Discord server will be opening tonight.

As this question states, it is everywhere these days and it is certainly getting to the point where it is expected everyone (particularly younger people) will have one. If you do not have one, this will guide you and you will hopefully make an account, it only takes two seconds.

The first thing to know about Discord is you can use it effectively in three different ways. You can either open it in your browser, you can download the Discord software onto your computer like you would with Skype, or you can use it via the app on your mobile, which is very sleek and easy to use.

To register an account, click here.

Now, all you need is to understand the interface. It can be a little confusing for five minutes, but everything becomes familiar pretty quickly. Here is a quick guide.

In the top left, the three people icon, these are your direct messages to someone. Your individual messages with another user.

On the left hand side, these are the servers you have joined. As you can see, there is the GTF one, and other ones like Eurovision and Formula 1 I have joined. These are the main thing you'll be clicking.

Next to the server list, you see the channels within the server you have clicked on. Most servers have a general chat, but you can also have other chats. For example, the House Cup server had a general chat, but also had the team chats depending on what team you were in. Depending on what role the Moderators of the server gives you changes what chats are visible to you.

If you want to change anything about your profile, simply click the wheel at the bottom. This will bring you to "My account". As well as changing your profile picture and username, you can change the appearance of Discord itself. It offers a lighter and darker theme.

The biggest benefit of having a Discord server will be the fact you can stay connected via mobile. Bored on the bus? Great, just open up Discord and you'll probably be auto-logged in. Our current chat sucks bad on mobile, and is practically unusable. Discord's app is very nice, and you will soon be able to not only view cams, but cam using your mobile too.

You can probably find Discords with your other interests too. Live in NYC? There will be an active Discord chat discussing everything happening in NYC. It's really worth getting.

As the people here live in many different timezones, how do you define "tonight"? (Talking about the server opening)
