Gyms are good for people who don't get to spend as much time in playgrounds as you.

But really, get a gym. I was scared to do it at first, but your self-consciousness melts away pretty quickly. And then you have access to all the equipment you might need and trainers who will work with your specific needs and desires. Some of the advice here is good, but everyone is unique and you really need to work with an actual human in person.

more money than sense...

You know, several of us do not own a business, even fewer of us are trust fund babies. :nag:

OT: I just finished losing 130 lbs. (~59 kg) about a year and a half ago, so I'm sure you can do it. The hardest part is keeping it off after you lose it (I regained about 15 of it, so I have to lose that bit again).

I don't have a trust fund...

My gym costs $75 per month, which includes access to my trainer. It's not that terrible an expense.

Trainers are beneficial even when considering their cost, until a two or three months have passed. After that, you should be fine on your own with the help of the internet, of course.

Ok, I'm going to be honest with you all. I hope you don't think I'm a wimp or something.

I'm very self-conscious about the way I look. I've been exercising these past few days, every day, and it feels fantastic. I've done my outdoors exercises early in the morning before anyone is out.

I just don't really want anyone to see me. It's a bit embarrassing, though I really have no idea why.

I think I would go to a trainer, but not right now. I'm doing pretty well, anyway, and the internet has a welth of info on this stuff.

Also my dad knows quite a bit about all of this. He used to work out alot. (He used to make me workout when I was little because I was pudgy, and wouldn't let me stop. I hated exercise because of that for a long time.)

You will eventually get rid of your hatred of other people watching you work out.

When I first started out, I just went walking at least once a day for 20 minutes. I decided no matter how hot it was, I'd go. My siblings were REALLY sweet and they'd go with me whenever I wanted almost. Having that motivation, I stuck to just walking for exercise from June of last year until September, when I outgrew it and knew I needed something more challenging. Then I joined a gym.

I completely feel you about not wanting to let others see you work out. You're hot. You get sweaty. You jiggle. You don't exactly feel attractive working out . I thought going to a gym would be awful because of all the thin people there working out and watching me struggle, but honestly, it was just a matter of finding the right gym. I picked Anytime Fitness and, where I live, it's a pretty decent mix of chubby people trying to get in shape and already-fit people staying in shape. All of the already-fit people are nice instead of judgmental, because many of them have been where I was.

It's not like you'd think it'd be. Nobody stares at me or pays me any attention at all. If you have a local YMCA, you should try joining up and using their gym. It's mostly utilized by families and more casual gym-goers.

Once you get over the hump and realize it's not a big deal to go to the gym and be around people while exercising, you can put that gym equipment to use, and soon, you'll feel like one of those fit people you see. Let them be your motivation.

Funny, I was about to post almost the exact same thing. I was extremely self-conscious at first: I started exercising by walking, and I was even concerned about neighbors seeing me. From there, I became more confident as I built up a bit of stamina and went to a few groups at local gyms. None of them really worked for me, and I preferred to work out by myself.

I also wound up at Anytime Fitness, and it is fantastic since they are open 24 hours a day. At first I'd go in during mid-day when it was mostly women there, and I'd work out for 30-45 minutes and go home. In the past couple months I started feeling a bit more confident about myself, and I've been going around 5pm during their "prime time". Nobody will stare at you, and if anything, people will see and respect that you're taking the initiative to get into better shape. Even if you are the only heavy guy there, what matters is that you're working on improving your health. Being able to listen to music and watch TV also helps distract you a bit at first. I've gotten to the point where I am almost proud to go to the gym, and a few people have commented that I've lost quite a bit of weight. If it's convenient for you, I'd highly recommend Anytime Fitness... Being able to go to the gym whenever you feel like it is very helpful, and you can start off by going at less-active times. The price of my local place is $10 a month.

Walking is good, but having the resources of a gym available to you is really helpful.

I'm looking at the website of a gym a couple of blocks from my home that my dad used to take me to to swim. For a single membership, it's only $24 for 2 years. That's extremely affordable, even for a lowly fast food worker like myself. I will definitely think about this.

Yup, it's always nice to find the right gym. Mine has a clientele that's almost completely composed of elderly lesbians, and it's small enough where I know most people by name. I have gone with my dad to Defined Fitness on occasion, and I hate it. It's filled with young, married women and unemployed Hispanics. The music is loud and the locker room smells sulfurous. Whatever suits you, I suppose.

sounds like your already on the right track. you just have to stay motivated. I joined a gym when I was 16 and I was always losing my motivation, but in the last year I really got into it I lost 10Kg and went from size 38 to 33 plus now I am much stronger and healthier. but diet is most important thing, then exercise and its about what is right for you.

my gym is great almost empty at the time I go and is AU$40 a fortnight, so just over 2 hours pay.

I pay more than that for a month of gym membership :wtc:. You lucky bitch.

Also, they should have an option for you to visit/try out the gym for a week or something so you can get a feel for the place. Do that and see if you like it.

Just wanted to update this - I haven't been weighing myself (I should have), but I have to wear a belt with every pair of jeans now. I feel like I've done well, and I can see that I've lost some weight.

My dad gave me a P90X program he never used (he's one of those people who buys every fitness book, program and product but doesn't get around to using them).

I've heard amazing things, so I'm going to experiment with this.

Any impressions about the P90X program?

Wish me luck!

P90X isn't that effective if you can't finish the whole program... It was created and dedicated to fit people to stay fit. Maybe you want to try that later. For chest workouts, they do 10 sets of 25 rep pushups, and it's ridiculously hard.

And 27$/2year membership? How is that possible?! I pay 38$/month at my gym and I got it on special student deal. Lucky...

But nice to know you're starting to lose weight. Good work and keep it up!

go running at night when it's cool outside and no one is out (take your time increasing distance). Count your calorie intake and balance what type of nutrients you take in. 1200 calories a day is good for losing weight if you aren't going to exercise that much. 1600 If you plan on exercising for 1 hour a day. Eat 400 calories per 4 hours, no more. Don't eat within 2 hours before you will go to sleep. Works well for me.

Only drink water (diet drinks often have aspartame which is bad for your brain). Having lots of canned fruit around is good because fruits taste yum and are mostly complex carbs.

Don't skip breakfast.

If you are going to keep track of your weight, don't get upset if you excercise and weigh more the next day than you did before. You won't always have the same amount of water in you when you weigh yourself.

Consider this:
1 lb of fat is approx 3500 calories.
You burn approximately 1500 calories a day just doing daily routine things
You burn approx 150 calories per mile you jog (let's say you end up jogging 3 miles a day)
You eat 1200 calories a day

1500+450 = 1950 calories burned per day
1950-1200 = 750 calories burned including your food intake

750 x 7 days in a week = 5250 calories burned per week
5250/3500 calories = 1.5 lbs of fat burned per week

In one month under this regimen you can expect to burn about 6.5 lbs of fat.

HIIT is really good, I read somewhere that 30 minutes of HIIT is +/- equivalent to 1 hour of steady state cardio plus you continue to burn for 24 hours after at accelerated metabolic rate, but I would do that 3-4 times weekly. Drink water all the time is also good, a good chunk of your weight may be water weight and my friend said intermittent fasting broke her weightloss plateau so you could consider that once you hit yours. Good luck buddy. :)
