Where on earth did you hear that saliva kills HIV? :blargh:

I would hazard a guess at him assuming, given it's not too shabby at getting rid of some pathogens.

Oh? Could you link me to some info on that?

I read that on the first page"Why is it harder to catch HIV from Oral sex?
Your mouth is like a fortress to HIV, it's designed to keep out bugs in the first place. Your saliva is also very good at destroying HIV, since it contains enzymes that damage HIV, making it unable to reproduce. There are also very few of the cells that HIV can infect in the mouth, since HIV needs certain select cells."

^ I'd still like to see some source for that information.

The rectum is a mucosal membrane meant to absorb liquid from your stool before defecation, so it is really easy for the virus to pass into the body and bloodstream.

Do you think it should be removed from the OP until we have evidence for that?

I do.

Or perhaps I'll add a "[citation needed]". :P

HIV is not a gay virus. It's a problem for humans in general. You need to decouple HIV and homosexuality in your mind.

Lol I haven't looked at this in ages. That fact is largely true just due to the fact that HIV is so sensitive to changes in its surroundings. I did properly research it all at the time. I can't be bothered to try finding the fact though so I'll just remove it, probably safer anyway. I might write a version 2 of this at some point, try and slim it down a bit but keeping the info.

Swallowing is believed to be worse than spitting though. The risk factor increases when combined with deepthroating, putting additional stresses on the throat wall lining.

The lining of the rectum is pretty fragile. HIV gets through the lining and enters the bloodstream.

Just saw this an hour ago and felt an urge to post this. An HIV cure could be available in a few years with this news... :runaway:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-24051860

TL;DR Scientists cured monkeys of an HIV-like virus known as SIV - the disease is "100x more aggressive than HIV" - they were treated and tested with no traces of the virus post-treatment. They developed a vaccine based on the herpes virus, ironically. However, the treatment only worked in about half of the tested monkeys, though it's suspected that the ineffectiveness in some monkeys is due to the very "pathogenic" nature of SIV. The researchers hope to start clinical trials on humans within two years.

They weren't cured post-infection. They were inoculated and then exposed to SIV.

Still, this is great progress. :keke:

Ah alright, thanks for pointing that out. :)
