House Cup: Creative Writing Challenge

You have been on a journey or trip. This journey or trip was one of discovery. It can be literal, it can metaphorical. Detail the journey/trip using one of the three sentences below as your opener.

Please choose one of these openers:

1."'It had not been an easy path to walk and I wasn't quite sure if it had been worth it..."

2. "We had reached the final start of our journey and set out on our path not knowing what would be our new beginning."

3. ''It was the end of the world and I still hadn't got out of bed...''

*note, it is up to you whether you want to use 'journey' or 'trip'. Both can be interpreted differently if you use your initiative, trust me. You may use GTF members in your writing. It may be wise to ask for their permission.

You will be judged on:

• Creativity - 10 Points. This is being original and unique
• Technical Ability - 10 Points. Your use of language and structure.
• Grammar and Spelling - 5 points.

Rules and Judging

• You may collaborate together with team members, but only one author gets credit.
• Plagiarism will lead to immediate disqualification. All entries will be checked
• You may use a maximum of three pictures.
• The word limit is 1500 words.
• Prize points depend on how many submissions there are, as will be the case with futures challenges.
• Winners announced 3rd July.
• Do not dispute the judging or prompt. Every challenge will be discussed before creation between judges.
• Regardless of where you finish, you will score two points for entering.
• Remember, this is for fun. :)

Any of the following seven judges will submit their scores: Myself, Morgan, Xade,
James, JimJam, Roman, and Russell. There will be a minimum of three judges submit their scores.

You may submit your entries by yourself. Please include your team badge in the centre at the top of the post. :)

Interesting, I can give this a try.

Just a question. Do we PM the entries or post them publicly?

This is a really hard prompt, but it should be interesting.

I'd also like to know the answer to Madasahat's question.

EDIT: It says - enter your team badge at the top of your post.

The enter your team badge at the top of your post thing was added later as an edit.

Anyway I think the real challenge with this one is the word limit. 1250 words is too low. I think the limit must be 2000 or something.

It was an edit. I knew someone would ask it. :D

1250 will remain. We asked on chat and some were saying 500-800. Jimjam was telling me it was too restrictive too and to set it at 1500. We have to remember that some judges don't have loads of time, particularly if we get a lot of entries.

I'm keen for these threads not to start of criticising the prompts and themes. Some of you will like it, some of you won't. It'll be the case every week. We have a group chat (me and judges) on Facebook for discussion and ideas. I originally wanted a 650 word limit, so clearly I was already prevented from a disaster. :P

I said it should be 1500 as a maximum as it's still restrictive but allows a lot of leeway and forgiveness. I tried, I tried.

Hmm... so I, as non-native speaker can ask someone from my team to correct any mistakes and it would be legal? God this will be harder for me in terms of the grammar and vocabulary ._. But shall do it.

Don't get me wrong, I can live with 1250 words. It was simply a suggestion, if its not possible to increase the limit then I'm OK with it. I like to write in a writing challenge lol, but no harm done. I think I can adjust to this.

Also it might have been better if we PM'd the entries to stop people from complaining about idea theft. I don't think I would have a problem with it, but it might cause problems for others.

This should be stressed :) Collaboration is okay and is encouraged, whether it the content or just ideas.

I've changed it to 1500 words. I'll be quiet and listen to the English teacher :P

Regarding PMing it, I thought about this and decided against it. It'll be obvious to see if any ideas have been stolen and we'll check against it. If we do see it, you'll be disqualified and points deducted from your team. It will be up to the judges discretion what qualifies after discussion with other judges. With between six and twelve eyes judging this, one of us should notice. I'd also like the entries to be spread out throughout the week, as opposed to all at one time.

Probably worth pointing out that your entry doesn't have to be 1500 words, at all. Something short but is concise would be better than something that is longer and full of waffle. If anything, a longer one may be harder in the sense there is the ability to start waffling and lose focus. It is completely up to the individual, but there will not be a disadvantage for doing something shorter if it works.

Also, remember, everyone who submits (with a certain amount of effort) will get two points; regardless of how well it is done.

Next Thursday, with the winners announced on Friday. Possibly Saturday if everyone leaves it until the last minute to submit. This will be the trend for every challenge, with Popularité every Monday. :)

I see you conceeded to a 1.5k word limit. We did try to caution you. :P

As for the rest of you entering, I shall look forward to reading the fruition of your efforts.
I'm not arrogant. I'm just better than you.
